Why You Might Be Addicted to Burnout (And How to Break Free)
For Nurses Feeling Stuck, Undervalued, and Exhausted — Here's Why It's So Hard to Leave the Bedside (and What to Do About It).
You tell yourself it’s just been a bad week… but the truth is, it’s been months. Maybe years. The exhaustion, the stress, the feeling of being stuck…it’s all too familiar.
And yet, here you are. Still showing up. Still putting your head down and pushing through, shift after shift.
So let’s ask the hard question:
Why is it so hard to walk away from nursing when we’re so burnt out?
🔄 The Burnout Loop
Burnout isn’t just stress - it’s deeper than that. It’s emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and the creeping feeling that you’re not making a difference anymore.
For many nurses, it becomes a loop:
Stress builds
You push through because you always do
You numb out, disconnect, and survive your shifts
You come home too tired to think about what comes next
➡️ Then you do it all again.
But what happens when burnout becomes… comfortable?
🧠 Addiction to the Familiar
It sounds wild, but hear me out.
Sometimes, we stay in burnout because it’s predictable. Known. Familiar.
I’ve heard this from nurses I coach:
“At least I know what to expect here, even if it’s bad.”
“I feel needed, even if I’m exhausted.”
“It’s chaos, but it’s my chaos.”
“What if I leave and it’s worse somewhere else?”
This isn’t weakness. This is human nature. We cling to what we know - even if it’s hurting us.
But staying stuck doesn’t make you loyal or strong. It makes you burned out, tired, and missing out on what else is out there.
